Our Journey So Far

1903

The U.S. Department of Commerce was founded on February 14, 1903, initially as the Department of Commerce and Labor under President Theodore Roosevelt. In its early years, it focused on economic growth, trade regulation, industry support, and data collection to shape business policies. Key activities included census reporting, trade expansion, maritime oversight, and business regulation. In 1913, it was reorganized into a separate Commerce Department, continuing its mission to support innovation, economic development, and global trade.
